- Bitter gourd – 2(cut into thin slices)
- Onions – 3 sliced
- Oil- 1 tbsp
- Mustard seeds – 1 tsp
- Channa daal – 2 tsps
- Cooked toor dal – 1 cup
- Asafoetida – 1/2 tsp
- Tamarind extract (from a small lemon size)
To roast and grind:
- Coconut – 1/2 cup
- Pepper – 1 tsp
- Urad dal – 1 tbsp
- Channa dal – 1 tbsp
- Coriander powder – 3 tsp
- Chilly powder – 2 tsp
Dry roast Urad dal, pepper and chana dal. Once it turns brown add coconut and roast till it turns light brown.
Atlast add coriander powder and chilly powder. Stir it for 2 mins.
Add some water and grind it into a thick paste.
In a kadai heat oil, add mustard seeds and channa dal.
Add onions and some salt.
Add bitter gourd and fry nicely( so that the bitter taste reduces).
Add tamarind extract, cover and cook for 2 mins.
Once it is 90% cooked add cooked dal, ground paste, asafoetida and sufficient water. Check for salt.
Let it boil for 4 to 5mins.
This goes very well with rasam rice or curd rice.
